23% - 30% of the United States population suffers from Allergies. A hypoallergenic dog is a pet with a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction. Hypoallergenic pets still produce allergens, but because of their coat type, absence of fur, none or low shedding fur, typically produce less than others of the same species.  Cockapoos are excellent pets for those that suffer w/allergy issues.

Temperament

Both the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle have similar traits making the Cockapoo a wonderful mixture of both breeds. Cockapoo puppies are extremely intelligent and very good with children. They are affectionate, loyal, very playful, cuddly, and easy to train. Cockapoos are personable, playful, bright and spunky.  They are gentle and easy to get along with. They are happy, love people and children, and socialize well with other pets.  They make excellent lap dogs. Playful and affectionate a Cockapoo puppy makes a great companion and family pet.

Cockapoos are gentle natured, sweet, loving, intelligent, smart and beautiful. Housebreaking is not a long arduous chore. Smart and capable, they are always eager to learn new tricks. They make great companion dogs and do well with children.

Note:  Be sure, not to let small dogs develop Small Dog Syndrome . this is where the dog believes he is the leader of the pack. This can cause varying behavior issues including but not limited to, snapping, growling, demanding, nervous, obsessive barking, untrustworthy of children, as the dog is trying to tell the humans what it is She or He wants them to do. These are traits that are made by many owners in establishing the pack leader among their dogs. Make sure you are firm, a confident pack leader and consistent. Even though both these dogs come with wonderful traits, it ultimately comes down to the owner who is doing the training.

Size

Cockapoos can come in three sizes. Toy which is under 12 lbs. Miniature which is 12 to 25 lbs and Standard which is over 26 lbs. We primarily raise miniature cockapoos whose weight is around 18 to 22 lbs. We have found this is an excellent size for families, traveling, hikers, walkers and those that want a lap dog.

Living Conditions
Both the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle are good for city/apartment life, and will do okay without a yard and so would a Cockapoo. If Cockapoos  are given enough exercise, they will be comfortable laying right next to you while inside. However, Cockapoos love to play inside as well as out and truly enjoy a daily walk.   Even just a 15 minute walk a day helps in fulfilling their exercise needs. While walking, be sure to make the dog heel on the lead. Remember that you are the leader of the pack and you lead the way. This will create a well balanced pet.

Grooming

  • There is little to no shedding, so dead hair must be removed by brushing at least twice a week, starting from being a puppy.
  • Check the eyes and ears regularly.
  • Get your puppy accustomed to having their nails clipped as when it becomes an adult it will be routine.
  • Teeth should be brushed weekly and should also be introduced as a puppy
  • This designer breed is great for allergy sufferers.
  • This breed does require regular grooming sessions with a professional groomer every 6 to 10 weeks unless you wish to learn to groom your dog yourself.
